Principal of the Day

Phoebe Disharoon

5th Grade

Hi. My name is Phoebe Disharoon, I am in 5th grade, and I got to be Principal of the Day.  My time as Principal of the Day was great. My favorite part was probably reading to other grades. Ms. Foehr and I went to various 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Kindergarten classrooms and read a few books that included "The Good Egg" and "The Bad Seed."  It was wonderful to get to read to these classes and see their reactions to these fun books!  Overall, It was a great day and it is really cool to help with all the things Ms. Foehr does around the school.

May 16- May 27 (3rd-5th Grade)

Here is the website that is provided for families by the state with information about the CAASPP and CAST tests. Parents can find sample test questions and more detailed information about the tests, score reports, and additional resources to support their child with testing. There's no need to log in to anything and the site is translated into multiple languages. It's very user friendly for those families wanting to learn more about the tests.

Youth Truth Survey

Our school recently participated in the national Youth Truth Survey and we are beginning to dive into the results.  All staff, families/guardians, and students in grades 3-5 were invited to participate in the survey.  This week we are taking a closer look at the area of "Communication and Feedback" disaggregated by subgroup in order to find ways to improve.

Celebrating AAPI and Jewish Heritage Month

Here are a few of the resources teachers are drawing from this month:

Classroom Resources & Links

Both the Jewish Heritage Month website and the Asian Pacific Heritage Month website feature teacher pages with primary sources and lesson plans for teachers to use to enhance their curriculum. Looking ahead to June, the Anti-Defamation League has dedicated part of its website to resources for teachers including lesson plans and recommended books. All are rich in resources and worth checking out.

In the video for Drawn Together, read by the author Minh Le, he talks about his inspiration for writing his story and invites the listener to make connections to their own life story.

The Conscious Kid website has a collection of video read alouds celebrating AAPI Month as well as other books that your students may enjoy hearing that can easily connect back to other heritage months.

Rainbow: A First Book of Pride, Harriet Gets Carried Away, and Stonewall. A Building. An Uprising. A Revolution are all featured in the Teaching Books resource in your Clever Portal. For each text, there are accompanying activities that you could do with your students including the Cultural Representation Reflection and customizable Read and Respond lessons.

2022-2023 Class Placement Process

Staff and I are beginning the process of planning for next year and will soon begin designing classes based on enrollment projections.

As per Board Policy, the teaching staff and principal share the responsibility for student placement. The teachers meet by grade levels before the end of the year to develop classes. Classes will be designed based upon the following criteria:

➢Learning styles

➢ Second language learners

➢ Students with special needs

➢ Social/Emotional needs

➢ Citizenship

Parent input will be considered if the input is based upon clear-cut educational or developmental needs (per board policy). All input must be received between April 25th and May 13th and be in writing to the principal. Accommodations will not be made to place your student in a class with a particular teacher or with friends and we ask that you do not include specific teacher names in your correspondence.  A family may have had a sibling in a class with a particular teacher previously but this is not considered a valid educational reason for placement. Each child’s needs are unique and because a brother or sister liked or disliked a teacher does not mean the sibling will have the same experience. The key ingredient to this process is trust. You need to trust that we will do the best job possible in placing your student with all the information at our disposal. We do the best job we can because it is important to us that each child has the optimum chance for success.
